Overview of GEMSAS selection process
A video made available to all ANU
students describing how their medical selection process has changed due to
COVID-19 and if students wish to take a CRS (course requirements satisfied)
grade. The beginning describes the medical school admission process form the
university, which may be informative to students attempting to enter
medicine.
From the video, the medical admission process is described as:
- Medical school ranking of candidates, each school has different criteria and contain a mixture of GAMSAT and GEMSAS GPA
- GEMSAS matches a candidates preferences with a medical school rank lists and allocates candidates for the medical school interview.
- GEMSAS has its own computer algorithm that does this.
- Medical schools conduct interview and submit interview scores to GEMSAS
- GEMSAS standardizes the interview scores.
- GEMSAS allocates candidates to medical schools for creating preliminary offer lists
- Each medical school shortlists eligible candidates
- using GEMSAS rating and selective to fulfill quotas
- GEMSAS conducts a final matching exercise to allocate non-shortlisted applicants to lower preference schools to create final offer list
Steps 1 and 3 are the only steps where students can affect their admission
chances, this was only meant to be informative. Always make sure to focus on
what you can control.
I recommend visiting the
GEMSAS website for medical school
admission information and visit the university website for specific admission
requirements.
The rest of the video is about CRS grade adjustments for calculating weighted
GPA which is ANU specific. If you're an ANU student, check your emails and you
should find the link to the video.
